NEW WORK: LA PAINTING

The fourth in a series of thematic exhibitions investigating
the current state of a particular style, subject, or medium
in contemporary art, this show examines trends in the
practice of painting by Los Angeles artists.

This is an exhibition of painting that could only come from
Los Angeles. The work is the progeny of California
minimalism as practiced by Irwin and McCracken and the
social appropriation of Ruscha, Therrien and Pittman. The
landscape, and more specifically the light of Southern
California, combined with illusion-making abilities of
Hollywood have influenced a group of artists whose work
is a true hybridization of the machined beauty of
minimalism and the material possibility of Pop.

Artists include Stuart Arends, Tim Bavington, Alicia Beach,
Sally Elesby, Ron Griffin, Seth Kauffman, Kori Newkirk,
Carter Potter, Greg Rose, Adam Ross, Sharon Ryan, Roy
Thurston, Tam Van Tran and Patrick Wilson.
