TIMOTHY BERRY
Res Non Verba

The Latin title translates, "deeds not words." San
Francisco artist Timothy Berry's new paintings announce
a departure from his previous works based in narrative.
In these works he explores pattern and iconography,
borrowing motifs from eastern and western traditions as
diverse as illuminated manuscripts, brocade fabrics and
Buddhist mandalas. Layer upon layer of rich color and
appropriated antique imagery of flora and fauna create
collage-like images that inhabit a space somewhere
between botanical prints and children's book illustration.

LILIANA PORTER
For You / Para Usted

In her video work, Argentinean Liliana Porter employs a
collection of wind-up toys, figurines, and stuffed animals
in a series of vignettes that comment on the human con-
dition. Each short scene focuses on the toys as they
"perform" both in and out of context. The sequences of
anthropomorphized kitsch create a psychological and
philosophical narrative that is complimented by a playfully
simple yet poignant soundtrack, written and performed
by Sylvia Meyer.
