Proportion is Reason made Visible
—Donald Judd

Drawing is… Never “realistic” nor in a position of descriptive
dependency, it knows a language of equivalents as econo-
mical and as abstract as mathematics…

—Mercedes Matter

These two artists have articulated with extreme precision
and clarity the basic principles of my search in drawing. I
look to nature for my subject matter, searching for the clear
structure within it, finding the horizontal and vertical relation-
ships within these organic forms. I seek to record the propor-
tion and increments of measurement that occur in nature and
how these affect our appreciation of it. I keep in mind formal
concepts of geometry, the golden section, the Fibonacci se-
quence. My practice is observing and recording how these con-
cepts occur naturally in the landscape.

When I am drawing, I am responding directly to what is in front
of me. My motivation is connections, relationships, the move-
ment between disparate points in space.
