Dorothy Napangardi is an Australian artist currently
residing in Alice Springs.
“Napangardi’s work is the product of a visual sensibility
in which the idea of space and movement has been con-
ceived very differently to that of most ‘western’ artists.
When Dorothy Napangardi paints her early days, conjur-
ing up her country so dramatically and with such brilliant
intensity, she is ‘thinking big’, and ‘thinking
back’, literally
and figuratively. Dorothy Napangardi is virtually incomp-
arable in sheer technical brilliance; in her ability to create
an illusionary sensation of movement across ‘country’
via
the elegant fluidity of her work; and in the powerful and
visceral responses that her work evokes in spectators. In
the final analysis, Napangardi’s ultimate artistic reference
point and her lifelong inspiration is Mina Mina, her birth-
place, the place of her ‘first mapping of the world’,
and
her family’s vast, remote and beloved estate."
